The Azores Islands are located 760 Miles West of Lisbon in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Group of 9 Islands has a population of almost 250,000. Ideally, you would need two weeks to sail and visit all the Islands. It is about 340 miles from Corvo to Santa Maria.
The Eastern Group of Islands contains Santa Maria, the Yellow Island which is 12.5km long and 7.5km wide. Sao Miguel lies 54 Miles Northwest and is 64.7km long and 8-15km wide. Sao Miguel has the largest population of the Azores. The Capital of Sao Miguel is Ponta Delgada.
The Central Group of Islands composes of Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Terceira & Graciosa. Faial known as the Blue Island has the cosmopolitan town of Horta which is a Mandatory Port of Call for all visiting Yachts. Pico contains the highest Mountain in Portugal at 2,351 meters. Sao Jorge is 56km long and 8km wide, it lies 11 miles north of Pico. It has numerous small quaint villages. Terceira lies 21 miles east of Sao Jorge. The city of Angra do Heroismo has Renaissance houses, Churches and Monasteries and is full of culture. Terceira is known as the Lilac Island. Graciosa lies 20 miles Northeast of Sao Jorge. The island is quite beautiful with green pastures with isolated white houses and villages. Abundant with Vegetables, Fruit and Cattle.
Flores and Corvo are located in the far Northwest of the Group. Flores is quite mountainous and is often regarded as the Westernmost point of Europe. The Island is 17km long and 12.5km wide. Corvo Island is the most Northern and the smallest of the Group. The island contains a solitary and extinct Volcanic Mountain, Monte Gordo.
