The US Virgin Islands (formerly known as the West Indies) include the busy St Thomas, the nearby island of St. John and the quiet St. Croix and Water Island. The Islands comprise of just over 52 miles² including the smaller islands.
The USVI were purchased by the US from the Danes in 1917. English speaking and blessed with fantastic beaches, they are a very popular Caribbean vacation destination.
Charlotte Amalie is the capital of the US Virgin Islands at St Thomas with historical Hotels, Old Inns, quaint guest houses and beautiful villas. All of the Islands have stunning scenery and incredible beaches. St. Thomas is an excellent place to begin exploring the North Caribbean Islands and especially the neighboring British Virgin Islands.
The Islands were discovered by the Explorer Christopher Columbus at the end of the 15th century. He found Araraks and Caribs, though the Island was later populated by slaves for the Tobacco Industry. There is a small 3 mile channel that separates the USVI from the British Virgin Islands.
